The significance of real-world research in shaping business strategies cannot be overstated. In the fast-paced and ever-evolving landscape of software development, grounding your approach in tangible, real-world data is paramount. On one hand, there’s the Shark Tank concept, embodying investor validation. This method offers a direct, unfiltered view of how potential investors perceive your business’s viability and growth potential. It’s a litmus test for your business model under the scrutinizing gaze of those who understand market dynamics and financial sustainability.

On the other hand, user experience (UX) research offers a different, yet equally vital perspective. It provides a deep dive into the needs, behaviors, and preferences of your end users. By focusing on UX, you gain invaluable insights into how your product fits into the lives of those it’s designed for, ensuring that every development decision is informed by user-centric data. Both paths offer unique benefits, and choosing the right one hinges on your specific business goals and the stage of your product’s lifecycle.

Engaging in a Shark Tank-style session can be incredibly beneficial for management teams, offering key insights from investors. In this environment, your business model, market strategies, and potential for growth are thoroughly assessed. Such investor feedback is invaluable; it gives you a clear understanding of how investors view your company, highlighting both strengths to leverage and areas for improvement.

This investor feedback significantly influences the setting of your strategic OKRs. It focuses your attention on crucial aspects like market viability and financial growth, which are vital for your company’s long-term success. This process helps in establishing ambitious yet realistic objectives, deeply rooted in market realities. Your key results evolve from simple targets to significant milestones, marking progress in financial sustainability and market reach. This investor-centric perspective ensures that your OKRs align perfectly with the demands of a competitive marketplace, turning them into powerful instruments for steering your company’s strategic path.

User Experience (UX) research, on the other hand, is crucial for deeply understanding your market and uncovering what your users truly need and prefer. This approach explores how users interact with your product, what they value, and the issues they face. Utilizing methods like interviews, usability testing, and surveys, UX research offers a comprehensive view of your product’s performance and areas needing enhancement.

The insights from UX research are key in shaping your OKRs, especially those focusing on product development and customer satisfaction. Your objectives become increasingly centered around the user, aiming to improve usability, accessibility, and the product’s overall appeal. Key results are then crafted to track progress in user engagement, satisfaction, and retention. Such an alignment ensures that every step in product development is in tune with user expectations, contributing to a product that not only meets but surpasses market needs. This user-focused approach in setting OKRs is essential for creating products that resonate with your audience and drive business success.

Clear and comprehensive communication across the company is essential in the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) setting process. It’s crucial for creating a unified organizational rhythm and a clear sense of purpose. Well-defined and thoroughly explained OKRs serve as a unifying element, aligning the efforts of every team member with the company’s overall goals. Such clarity in communication ensures that each team member not only knows their tasks but also understands the reasons behind them, fostering a shared sense of purpose and direction.

Communicating OKRs effectively helps dismantle barriers within the organization, encouraging cross-functional collaboration and enhancing understanding of how individual roles support the wider objectives. When team members grasp the larger picture and recognize their own impact, motivation and efficiency naturally increase, leading to a more cohesive and productive work environment. This systematic approach to establishing and sharing OKRs is key to maintaining operational consistency and guiding the organization towards its strategic objectives.

So the question is: how do you substantiate your OKRs? The strategic decision between investor validation and user experience (UX) research is key to operational excellence in software development. Choosing investor validation, such as the Shark Tank experience, aligns with a strategy focused on market viability and financial scalability. It’s about meeting investor expectations, securing funding, and ensuring your product aligns with market opportunities as seen by the Sharks in the Tank. This approach boosts operational efficiency by directing resources to areas with the highest potential for financial return and market impact.

On the flip side, opting for UX research aligns with a customer-centric strategy. It involves a deep understanding of user needs, enhancing product usability, and boosting customer satisfaction. This focus improves operational efficiency by creating products that truly resonate with users, thereby increasing user engagement, loyalty, and advocacy. While these paths differ, both are crucial and contribute significantly to a company’s operational excellence. Each approach enhances efficiency and effectiveness in unique yet complementary ways, demonstrating the importance of strategic choice in software development.

Being in touch for many years with a large amount of software development companies, big and small, a surprising number of them operate in a mode that can best be described as ‘performance art.’ This term aptly captures the essence of teams that are managed in name only. Using for instance the Scrum label, they put on a show of organization and structure, but beneath the surface, there’s a lack of substantive direction and coherent strategy. Meetings are frequent, yet productive outcomes are rare. Tasks are assigned and pursued, but without a clear understanding of how they contribute to the broader objectives. This approach leads to confusion, misaligned efforts, and a work environment where the appearance of activity is mistaken for progress, much like an art performance that prioritizes aesthetics over functionality.

This transformation can be achieved through the integration of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) with Agile methodologies. OKRs provide a clear, measurable framework for setting and tracking goals, which, when linked directly to Agile boards, offer a real-time view of progress against these objectives. This linkage ensures that every team member, from developers to managers, has a clear understanding of the company’s vision and their role in achieving it. It fosters transparency and enhances communication across the organization, ensuring that everyone is aligned and working in concert towards common goals. This approach not only streamlines the development process but also bridges the gap between strategic planning and execution.

Tech Stuff

The first live demo given by Chris Dias and set the tone for the rest of the event. Chris gave a very nice demo of developing a Node.js project using Visual Studio Code running on a Mac. Then he deployed the software to a Docker container running in Azure.

Quite impressive, but besides that it literally embodied the tagline of the event: “for any developer on any platform“.

The next stars on the podium were both Visual Studio 2017 and Visual Studio for macOS. Both products see a lot of work done in further integrating the Xamarin toolkit to make mobile development very easy. It is clear that the next edition of Visual Studio packs a lot of new exciting features for developers in general.

The other impressive new launch was Visual Studio Mobile Center: a single web portal that holds all necessary ingredients for the serious mobile app developer: build, test, deploy, crash handling, statistics, authentication and database storage. All wrapped in a beautiful, elegant web interface. On top of that it has it’s own RESTful API, all documented by using Swagger. The open-source ‘virus’ has caught on big time inside MS

Strategic

The first guest on stage was Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation. It was announced that Microsoft has joined the Linux Foundation as Platinum Member, and as such will get a seat in the board.

In line with that announcement was the news that both Samsung and Google have joined the .NET foundation. Samsung is going to use .NET Core as platform for upcoming Tizen TV’s. Google wants to make sure that .NET is a first-class citizen on it’s own cloud proposition.

Throughout all the announcements made and demos given one thing is clear: the direction taken a few years ago to focus one the hand on the cloud (Azure) and on the other hand provide developers with the best tools out there, no matter which language and operating system they run, is consistently executed and embraced. It also shows that the acquisition of Xamarin plays a crucial role in this.

At XABLU we’re pretty excited about what we saw yesterday. Our guys can’t wait to get hold of the stuff and build serious applications with it!

Why do you need a review?

Over the years we have seen the mobile space maturing rapidly. While first companies ‘just wanted an app as soon as possible’, these days companies have a full mobile strategy often labelled with a ‘Mobile First’ tag. We have also seen a change in consumer behaviour: brand loyalty is at a low, and feedback to your product or service comes quick and often rather vocal.

It is in this space that we think UX (User eXperience) of your product or service is key: it basically decides whether your customer feels happy and satisfied or disappointed. Obviously this has a direct impact on your retention, especially considering low brand loyalty resulting in customers switching easy and swift.

What defines an user experience?

There are a lot of things that contribute to how your user perceives your mobile application. We’ve listed the ones that have the most impact.

FUNCTIONALITY

You might have the most fancy app ever, but if it doesn’t have any added value for your users they are not going to be using it very often. That’s why you first need to look at what problems you are trying to solve for your user.

USABILITY

After defining what the goals are of your user it is of great importance to make those goals easily reachable. The users should be able to navigate through the app without difficulty, so they can find what they’er looking for. Also keep in mind that they probably use other apps more than your app (unless you’re Facebook). This means that using elements that users are familiar with and recognise will help them quickly understand the app.

VISUAL

They say that you should make the first impression count and that especially applies to design. First impressions are in 94% of the cases related to design. The visual style should support the functionality of the app and highlight the most important actions on the screen. Using your brand’s colors and style in your app correctly helps building trust and recognisability.

How can we help you?

We at XABLU know from experience that designing a ‘good app’ is a craft. It’s not something you can do on the side by just ‘translating’ your web site. It requires well-trained, highly qualified staff for mobile app design that are intimately familiar with all the design aspects of the mobile operating systems.

So to help you out we offer you to do a full UX/UI review on your existing app, regardless of the technology in which the app is build! This means that our highly qualified design staff will have an in-depth look at your app and write a beautiful report with their findings and recommendations! For that we only need access to your app and some background information and within a week you will receive your report. It’s that easy!

When Microsoft introduced C# and .NET back in the day, at least the promise of a potential cross platform technology like Java was there. However, in those days we’re talking about ‘Microsoft 1.0’, were ‘run everywhere’ basically meant: ‘run on every flavor of MS Windows’. This narrow view, amongst others, resulted in C# and .NET only being used inside MS shops, and totally neglected in the ‘alternative universe’. Then Mono, an open-source, cross platform implementation of C#/.NET came along. But Microsoft’s (together with Novell, which at some point owned Mono) rather ambiguous stance resulted in C# being left alone by the majority of the open source community and companies that have a strong open source policy.

Lots have changed over the last years. We’ve witnessed the birth of Microsoft 2.0, which is in it’s latest form a huge open source supporter and contributor. Funny fact about Mono? It is now owned by Microsoft via its recent Xamarin acquisition.

So what about this release then? Why is this so important? It’s largely ignored by the big IT blogs and news sites, and (mostly) ridiculed by the open source community. But what we’re looking at here is the first version of a completely rebuild, truly cross platform, open source foundation for .NET/C# technology that really runs everywhere. Backed by one of the biggest IT companies in the the world. Sounds familiar? It should, as this is comparable with the promise of Java. And although there’s a lot of (sometimes overheated) debate about Microsoft’s ways, there is in general consensus on the technical merit of C# technology.

And yeah, on one hand it’s more limited than the full .NET stack, and on the other hand it’s still a little bit rough on the edges on Linux. But imagine where this could be going. I wouldn’t be surprised if C#/.NET will see a significant growth in the open source world, which is now mainly dominated by C/C++. And while Java is struggling under Oracle’s wings, C# and .NET have a bright future ahead!

With the recent Microsoft Xamarin takeover it might be the right time to re-evaluate your current mobile app (strategy) and the technology stack it’s based on.

If you have been in the position where you needed to define and give shape to a mobile strategy then you’re probably familiar with the choice that needs to be made with respect to the technology stack to use.

In general this choice always ends up with 2 possibilities: either go native or choose a cross-platform solution (MADP). Within the cross-platform domain Xamarin has been one of the best alternatives there is, probably right next to going for a hybrid (HTML5) solution.

However, while being a technical sane solution Xamarin always had a few down-sides, the steep license price being one of them. While this is common in enterprise IT-land in general, it is not in the mobile space: both Apple and Google have made their mobile toolchain completely free and available for everyone. And it’s not that these respective toolchains aren’t any good; the constant battle to favour developers has resulted in arguably the best developer environments available.

So there are many ‘Microsoft houses’ out there that decided to go either native or go HTML5 for their mobile strategy, resulting in the challenge to integrate and incorporate ‘alien technology’. And while you might have climbed that hill and think you’re on top of it, now is the time to re-evaluate.

The first thing that Microsoft did when they bought Xamarin was announcing that the whole stack would be open-sourced. In the past few months they’ve kept word and indeed open-sourced various Xamarin components with an impressive speed and tenacity.

And it is exactly this move that makes it possibly worthwhile to rethink your mobile strategy. Even if you’ve got mobile apps that are mature on all levels, the idea of having them build with open-source technology that is common throughout your organisation is tantalizing. Imagine the possibilities of knowledge sharing, code reuse, efficiency improvements etc.

“But what about all those investments we’ve made into our mobile strategy? Are we’re throwing that away?” Certainly not, you should think about this as the next step. As with every other piece of software mobile apps have a (technical) life span as well, and it’s arguably even shorter than enterprise software in general. So re-thinking your mobile strategy on a regular base is good approach anyhow, and switching technology could be an additional trigger to this.

We at Xablu are in the perfect spot to help you out and guide you in this process. Not only are we senior on Xamarin and native app development, we’re also deeply knowledgeable about the processes involved. Would you want to know more about the possibilities?
