Last week, we had the pleasure of presenting Xablu’s tips & tricks to the contestants of the MyGalileoApp Competition 2019 organized by the European GNSS Agency (GSA). The competition calls for creative mobile application ideas that could benefit from the precise positioning offered by Galileo. Now, the 30 selected teams will embark on the next stage of the competition where we, from Xablu, will act as mentors.

In 2016, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), called Galileo, went live. It was created by the European Union through the GSA. Galileo can provide high-precision information on our location, which is crucial for daily life activities. Location is the driving force behind many domains such as logistics and transport, which are indispensable in countless sectors such as agriculture, automated mobility, and healthcare.

The MyGalileoApp Competition received 148 innovative application ideas. Of these applications, 30 teams have been selected to partake in the second phase of the competition. During this phase, the teams will be supported by mentors and Xablu is honored to provide some of these mentors for the contestants.

Xablu knows, like no other, how important it is to solidify a concept before starting to build an application. Only by ensuring the solution matches the problem, the usability matches the user and the application fits the context, the application has a higher chance of being adopted and delivering the impact it is meant to have. The GSA works with the same mission while linking space to user needs: “While constantly working closely with a broad range of stakeholders, we ensure that the EU satellite navigation systems are fit for purpose and continue to meet the needs of those who use them today and tomorrow.

Xablu offers the contestants a tailored mentorship on Participatory Design

By helping them work together with their users, their chances of building a successful application increases immensely. Together, we can determine their stakeholders, create a plan of action for testing their application and evaluate the usability. It might seem that this work will take away time from the actual coding of the application but executing this process will save the contestants a lot of coding work and, thus, time since many issues are solved prior to development.

Moreover, Xablu has the technical expertise to help contestants realize their applications. Xablu builds applications through Xamarin, which allows for creating one shared-code base. This way, applications can be built for Android, iOS, and Windows with native app features and a native app feeling, while reusing a large percentage of your code-base. This allows for very efficient cross-platform development.

We want to wish all of the contestants good luck with the development of their applications and we hope we can personally help them achieve great impact using Galileo.

Last Saturday, July 22nd, we hosted the Hengelo edition of Xamarin Dev Days at Xablu headquarters! As an app company that is 100% focused on Microsoft Xamarin, this was a great chance for our team to share their experience and knowledge with developers who are just getting started with the platform.

Xamarin Dev Days are full-day training events designed by Xamarin and run by partners around the world, aimed at getting beginners building, testing, and connecting native iOS, Android, and Windows apps. They include a morning of training sessions followed by a hands-on lab assignment in the afternoon. We were very excited to join this global movement with an event in Hengelo, the Netherlands!

A morning deep-dive into Xamarin

The morning started out with a great mood, as enthusiastic developers began arriving from the Hengelo area and as far as Germany. After some time for coffee and networking, Xamarin Consultant Marc Bruins kicked off with an Introduction to Xamarin. This was followed by a session on Cross Platform UI with Xamarin.Forms, by Microsoft and Xamarin MVP Martijn van Dijk. After a well-deserved coffee break, participants then continued with a session on Connected Apps with Azure led by Senior Xamarin Developer Maurits van Beusekom.

Hands-on afternoon assignment, with a side of ice cream

After a lunch full of Xamarin discussions, Harry ten Berge got participants started on their assignment: building a connected app with Xamarin.Forms and Azure. Everyone took up the challenge, leading to an afternoon of intensive learning, with the XABLU team on hand to answer questions and guide the developers through the assignment. The hot July afternoon was also broken up by an impromptu ice cream session!

Upcoming hackathons and custom in-house training

Our team had a great time leading the Xamarin Dev Day, but as you may have heard, Xamarin is discontinuing the series at the end of 2017. However, we’ll be organizing plenty more Xamarin and MvvmCross community meetups and hackathons in the coming months!

Keep an eye on our Twitter account @xabluhq for announcements about upcoming events to attend in the Netherlands and beyond! Follow @xabluhq

If you’re looking for in-house training to get your company’s development team up and running with Xamarin, we also offer custom Xablu Dev Days for developers from level 50 and up! Just get in touch for more information.

esterday, XABLU hosted a Google I/O Extended event in Luxembourg City. A diverse crowd of tech enthusiasts came out to enjoy networking over pizza and drinks, followed by a live screening of the Google I/O 2017 keynote. The upbeat atmosphere was enhanced by the cool industrial-style venue The Office and the amazing weather. The keynote was full of surprises and exciting new products, for both developers and consumers. Here’s what we took note of:

AI-everything

Last year AI was introduced as the big ‘new thing’, this year AI got the overall focus. AI is now deeply embedded in all of Google’s products; from translation to photo sharing to a new ‘intelligent’ drawing tool, AutoDraw. The clear message was that AI holds amazing potential to help us in every part of our lives, and is now a main focus of Google in general. Voice activated, it can interact with you in a conversational manner. Google is taking this to the next level: soon you’ll be able to pay with Assistant, translate with the Assistant and integrate with 3rd parties. Also big news was the announcement that the Assistant is coming to iOS, taking on Siri.

Looking to 2018

With the amazing potential of all of the newly announced products and features from Google, we can’t wait to see how these develop and the new apps and services that will result over the coming year!

Intro

Last week the Xamarin Partner Summit took place in Amsterdam. The Xamarin Partner Summit is a summit for partners of Xamarin funnily enough. Having the privilege of working with XABLU, a 100% Xamarin focussed company and a Xamarin premier consulting partner based in the Netherlands, we were duly invited.

There were two possible tracks to take; Business or Technical (Intermediate/Advanced). Naturally I followed the advanced technical track hosted by Colby Williams.

Modularizing Code

One of the key points I took away from the talk was the idea of modularizing your code. Xamarin always promotes the idea of code reuse between platforms, but what about reusing code between applications. When writing code, we should not be writing to only satisfy the current problem we are solving, but think of writing the code in a way that can be reused.

This involves naming your methods and classes with a more generic convention and abstracting them appropriately. Then, instead of copy pasting this code between projects, create Nuget packages. An added benefit to this is that you have access to some versioning functionality allowing you to have appropriate versions of the package in different applications.

Another important and simpler way of modularizing your code is to use plugins as often as possible. You don’t need me to tell you the benefits of avoiding the reinvention of established code solutions.

Memory

IMAGES
Not really an advanced topic but it goes without saying that you should provide the correct image sizes as they will be displayed in the application, this avoids the device having to resize your image every time it is used, causing memory and performance issues.

What was interesting was to hear how many of the other Xamarin experts implement their images. Most implemented them in the traditional way (5 different pixel density versions in Android and 3 in iOS). Some, including myself a couple times, used fonts. This surprised Colby as he uses and expected others to use Vectors (pdf in iOS). This provides a better solution for scaling between devices and avoiding the aforementioned pitfalls. However, vectors come with their own problems which are mentioned in this article by Florina Muntenescu.

MEMORY LEAKS
Do a search for the amount of += that are in your solution, then compare them to the amount of -= in your solution. If there are more += than -= then you may be leaking some memory. Care must be taken to remove any event handler delegates, otherwise the garbage collection will not be able to clear the memory. This can be done in the relevant lifecycle event of the view/class.

Forms

Sometimes a contentious issue between Xamarin developers, we were hesitantly asked for our views on this platform. There needn’t have been any hesitation as everyone seemed to be fairly open minded and almost all on the same page.

The consensus was that Forms is useful in certain scenarios and circumstances, but ultimately it was a magic pill that was not a long term solution for any application.

Forms constrains the UI designer, which will have an impact on the end user experience, and end users don’t care about how much code you managed to share between platforms. To provide a custom platform specific UI for the end user, custom renderers will have to be made for every page and for every platform, defeating the purpose of Forms being the ultimate code sharing tool.

Furthermore, Forms hides the underlying platform specific environment, preventing the developer from having a real understanding of the platform and mobile development.

However, the appeal of forms is understandable. Many companies have .Net developers with C# and XAML skills that can be transferred into the Xamarin Forms environment. And with companies realising that they must have a mobile solution, backed by the lack of Xamarin professionals available, Xamarin Forms seems like a perfect solution.

Finally

The event was a great experience. The best part was the chance to talk with many Xamarin developers from around the world about our thoughts, concerns and excitement for the future.

Tech Stuff

The first live demo given by Chris Dias and set the tone for the rest of the event. Chris gave a very nice demo of developing a Node.js project using Visual Studio Code running on a Mac. Then he deployed the software to a Docker container running in Azure.

Quite impressive, but besides that it literally embodied the tagline of the event: “for any developer on any platform“.

The next stars on the podium were both Visual Studio 2017 and Visual Studio for macOS. Both products see a lot of work done in further integrating the Xamarin toolkit to make mobile development very easy. It is clear that the next edition of Visual Studio packs a lot of new exciting features for developers in general.

The other impressive new launch was Visual Studio Mobile Center: a single web portal that holds all necessary ingredients for the serious mobile app developer: build, test, deploy, crash handling, statistics, authentication and database storage. All wrapped in a beautiful, elegant web interface. On top of that it has it’s own RESTful API, all documented by using Swagger. The open-source ‘virus’ has caught on big time inside MS

Strategic

The first guest on stage was Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation. It was announced that Microsoft has joined the Linux Foundation as Platinum Member, and as such will get a seat in the board.

In line with that announcement was the news that both Samsung and Google have joined the .NET foundation. Samsung is going to use .NET Core as platform for upcoming Tizen TV’s. Google wants to make sure that .NET is a first-class citizen on it’s own cloud proposition.

Throughout all the announcements made and demos given one thing is clear: the direction taken a few years ago to focus one the hand on the cloud (Azure) and on the other hand provide developers with the best tools out there, no matter which language and operating system they run, is consistently executed and embraced. It also shows that the acquisition of Xamarin plays a crucial role in this.

At XABLU we’re pretty excited about what we saw yesterday. Our guys can’t wait to get hold of the stuff and build serious applications with it!

XABLU attended TechDays 2016 with our ‘100% Pure Xamarin’ story. It was really a blast to be in the zone where the action is happening. Over the last years Microsoft is making a big shift towards open source and being cross-platform; the vibration that this gives is amazing! It’s inspiring to see all these Microsoft partners sharing their knowledge on such a broad scale.

Of course XABLU didn’t go unnoticed at this event. During the first day of TechDays we made it to Xamarin Premier Consulting Partner! On the second day there was another highlight: XABLU offers MvvmCross training now.

Our very own Martijn van Dijk (@mhvdijk) and Marc Bruins (@MarcBruins) both had a session which was well attended. Martijn talked about MvvmCross and its unique Presenters mechanism and Marc talked about using Xamarin in the enterprise.

If you sum up all that has happened during TechDays we had a wonderful two days. Thanks TechDays for the amazing experience and see you next year!
