Brewing Beer in the Cloud: Embedded Systems

On the 10th of May, we held a workshop titled “Brewing Beer in the Cloud: Embedded Systems Workshop”. The event was a success, with atten dees learning about the process of brewing beer and how it can be optimized using embedded systems and cloud computing.

The workshop started with a brief introduction to the basics of brewing beer, including the ingredients and equipment needed. We then delved into the role of embedded systems in beer brewing, discussing how sensors and controllers can be used to monitor and regulate the brewing process.

Next, we talked about how cloud computing can be used to further optimize beer brewing. By uploading data from the sensors and controllers to the cloud, brewers can analyze the data and make informed decisions about how to adjust the brewing process for optimal results. We also discussed the potential for using machine learning algorithms to analyze the data and make automated adjustments to the brewing process.

After the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with embedded systems by working on a brewing setup that incorporated sensors and controllers. They were able to see firsthand how the sensors and controllers could be used to monitor and regulate temperature, pH, and other factors that affect the quality of the beer.

the “Brewing Beer in the Cloud: Embedded Systems Workshop” was a great success, and we hope to hold more events like this in the future. We would like to thank all of our attendees for their participation, and we look forward to continuing to explore the exciting possibilities of embedded systems and cloud computing in beer brewing.

Xablu Team participates in the Monkey Conf

This week, on the first day of December, it was the fourth edition of Monkey Conf.

Monkey Conf is a .NET related event, the biggest held in Spain. This edition and the one from the year before were online conferences because of the pandemic situation.
While this might sound as a downside, it was a great opportunity for them to go global, allowing not only viewers from all around the world but also speakers.

The talks

Even though the event is oriented to .NET, all the talks were about mobile: Xamarin and .NET MAUI.

After the event’s Keynote, our fellow Sebastián Pérez was the first speaker.

He talked about what you need to know to get started with .NET MAUI: from how Xamarin became .NET MAUI, what tools to use or if you should wait until it’s release and more!

But Sebastián was not the only one of our team who participated in the event, I was there too for the second talk.
Mine was about writing platform-specific code for your .NET MAUI applications. In this session you will learn what it is, why should you use it and different ways of implementing it with some code samples.

Say goodbye to XamExpertDay

Last month there was an event that brings us a lot of content in the world of Xamarin: XamExpertDay 2021. Because of the global context, this year as last year was held virtually and was attended by Microsoft technical leaders and developers with a lot of experience in the world of Xamarin. Another curious fact is that it will be the last edition of the event at least with this name because Xamarin will be formally incorporated into .NET with the release of .NET 6.

This edition was particularly special because topics related to .NET MAUI have already begun to be seen. If you are interested in the subject we highlight these talks:

There really was a great level of talks with very curious topics such as handling a hand sanitizer with a mobile application. I was also struck by the talk of comparing MVVM and MVU patterns as it is a topic that is being analyzed for the next versions of .NET MAUI.

We at Xablu really like these events, and we’re looking forward to the .NET Conf next week. And maybe we’ll have some surprises for that conference. Stay tuned !

Microsoft Build 2020 – What Day 2 Brought Us

Another day at the 48-online Microsoft Build event! Microsoft delivered some more exciting updates and we are happy to share them with you in this blogpost. Did you miss the announcements from yesterday? You can still read those back here.

The Future of Tech

Kevin Scott, Microsoft’s CTO, delivered a great session about how he, and Microsoft, envision the future of our industry. At this point it is no surprise that Microsoft is profoundly committed to AI in the long run. But, in order to succeed, he recognises that AI must become a platform that allow developers to build their own solutions on top of it. Therefore, the future is in the hands of developers.

As part of the evolution in AI technologies and tooling, self-supervised learning models are becoming more and more relevant: when computers don’t require labeled data in their learning process, much more can be achieved in less time. This is especially interesting in natural language processing (NLP), and Microsoft announced yesterday that Turing NLG will be open sourced!

MS Supercomputer and Turing NLP

Microsoft created a cloud-hosted supercomputer, which ranks in the top 5 worldwide. It’s hosted in Azure and it was deployed in just 6 months. Surprisingly, this new supercomputer is still part of the carbon-footprint plans of Microsoft.

The purpose for such a powerful machine was also unveiled yesterday: Microsoft is partnering up with OpenAI to train their AI models. During this announcement, OpenAI showed a demo of their AI model being used for code generation in Python – this was by far one of the peek moments in the day: Software writing high quality software. Did we just witness the future of software development?

C# 9

At this time of the year, we are always excited about the shiny announcements Mads Torgersen will surprise us with. This time, the team announced the new features that will be part of C# 9. There are certainly a lot, most of them focused on immutability and records: init-only properties will be included, which will allow developers to mark properties as immutable. Also marking a class with the “data” keyword will make the entire object immutable. Important note: records will have a value-based equality by default.

In order to take the “immutable” experience to the next level, a “with” expression has been added to the language. It will allow developers to instantiate a new object based on an existing one with some edits.

The experience for new developers will also be simplified: the boilerplate required to create a “Hello World” will be drastically reduced.

Pattern matching has also received many improvements and new possibilities, such as type, relational and logical patterns.

Surface Duo

Yesterday Microsoft also offered more updates on app development for Surface Duo devices. It offers a wide UX approach with different navigation patterns, such as Extended canvas, Master-detail, Two page, Dual-view and Companion pane.

The good news is that existing apps will just run, as expected, but there are additional capabilities that developers can add to get the most out these devices. Here, all developers are welcome: Kotlin and Java, Unity for games, React Native, Flutter, Web technologies, Xamarin.Forms and Xamarin.Android!

Q&A with Scott Guthrie

Scott Guthrie, the Executive Vice President of Microsoft, provided a talk which highlighted the unity and alignment of the company under a single vision. As usual, he transparently improvised his talk with questions from the community.

He talked about how C# offers productivity, performance and library reutilisation and how we are now able to solve problems that were labeled as “Science Fiction” only 30 years ago. The combination of Supercomputer and AI is what makes this possible, and we are super excited to be a part of that! According to Scott, Microsoft’s goal is to not only make users productive, but also to keep a “human touch” with a dash of humor.

Did you know that if Scott Guthrie would not be working at Microsoft, he would have been a history professor? We would enroll in his classes immediately!

2nd Day and Beyond...

The focus on the “human touch” in this conference was very noticeable, we very much value how speakers drive their talks from their homes with full transparency. How did you enjoy the conference? And what was the best announcement in your opinion?

How Location Services Impact our Future

In honor of the MyGalileoApp Challenge Finals in Prague last week, Xablu was invited to give a talk to the audience. Galileo, the focus of the challenge, is the European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) aimed to provide an independent high-precision positioning system. Within the challenge, teams needed to create applications that would highlight the added value Galileo offers. Xablu shed light on the impact location services can have in the near future.

Location services are a major part of our everyday lives: we cannot imagine a world anymore where we have to rely on paper maps instead of mobile navigation. We all use location services every single day: from planning public transport, to navigation in driving, as well as receiving weather updates based on where we are or even advertisements we see online. Location services are not only practical, they can really improve our quality of life.

One of the sectors that could really benefit is the healthcare sector. In the current situation, ambulances can arrive more quickly at the emergency scene due to real-time navigation and more quickly to the closest hospital with their patients. Patients can also easily find the specific healthcare institution they need in their area. Not to forget, personal healthcare through fitness or counting steps can now be achieved just using a mobile phone with real time location services.

However, the healthcare industry is in need of more. Real-time location services can make a huge impact in the healthcare industry and there are already many opportunities that should be integrated everywhere.

Imagine an ambulance is called to an emergency situation and all the traffic lights are responding to always let the ambulance have a clear path to get to the emergency scene. This would decrease dangerous traffic situations, not only for the ambulance but for all other traffic as well. The ambulance arrives at the scene and easily updates the hospital they are coming and the status and situation of the patient. This would allow hospitals to receive an up-to-date estimated time of arrival and they can prepare for the specific patient: locating the right equipment in the hospital building, preparing the allocated emergency room, locating the right physician for the case who is nearby and ensuring they are present when the patient arrives.

This is not just a practical example, this situation can actually help save lives.

The increasing accuracy of both outdoor, but also indoor navigation, opens up a world of opportunities. The rise and growth of Galileo will make an absolute difference.

Last week, we attended the finals of the MyGalileoApp Challenge in Prague, organised by the European GNSS Agency (GSA). During the challenge, Xablu provided mentorship to four out of ten finalists. All the teams pitched their applications, and it was inspiring to see the end-results. We want to congratulate all the contestants on their achievement thus far and we cannot wait to see how their Galileo-driven applications will improve our lives as we know it.

MyGalileoApp – Two Xablu mentored teams under the final 10!

The Xablu Participation

The ten projects in the MyGalileoApp competition judged to be the most exciting in terms of their level of innovation, market potential, and technical feasibility are finally revealed!. Selected from 30 projects shortlisted for the competition’s first development phase, these 10 projects will now advance to the second development phase, at the end of which they should deliver a fully functioning app. Two of the 10 finalists were mentored by Xablu.

Trukatu and Henk Kok: The Smart Navigation and Infotainment innovation category

The Smart Navigation and Infotainment innovation category account for three of the 10 finalists. The Ready Park app (France), GALILEONAUT (France) and the Trukatu app (Spain) which is a mobile C2C platform that connects people who want to rent or lease items with owners who have items to rent out. Trukatu enjoyed the mentoring and guidance of Xablu Co-Founder Henk Kok.

LetMeAut and Maaike Dokter: the Fitness, Sport and mHealth category

Two of the shortlisted projects fall in the Fitness, Sport and mHealth category. The first of these – PanPan – Possible Assistance Needed (Germany) and LetMeAut (Italy) – makes everyday tasks easier for people with autism. Our team is proud to have had our Solution Advisor for Mobile Healthcare Maaike Dokter supervising LetMeAut towards their positioning under the top 10.

The other five

These four of the 10 shortlisted projects are in the Augmented Reality and Games innovation category: uMaze (Finland), ARGEO (Italy), STPR (Poland, Australia, Ukraine) and arstory (Germany). Finally, the Mapping, GIS and Agriculture innovation category accounts for one app among the top ten shortlisted projects: Tractor Navigator (France).

High standards leading to the hard competition!

We are proud to not have one but two of our experts contribute to the team’s developments and achievements in this very high-standard and hard competition.

“The standard of entry in this year’s competition was very high, which made the judges’ task a difficult one. However, the final 10 projects stood out in terms of their innovative approach and uptake potential and we are looking forward to seeing the final working apps in October,” said Justyna Redelkiewicz Musial, in charge of LBS and IoT market development at the European GNSS Agency (GSA). “We hope that the 20 projects that didn’t make it into the second development phase will continue to develop their apps because, at the finals, they will also have the opportunity to demonstrate the progress that they have made,” she said.

The Clock is ticking!

The 10 projects selected for the second development phase will have until October 21 to deliver a finalized version of their app with 100% functionality. During this phase, the teams can receive technical support from the competition’s technical and business advisory team. At the end of the phase, the application should be already available for download on the Google Play and Apple platforms.

Receiving the reward they deserve!

All teams that will successfully complete the second development phase will be invited to the finals, to be held on November 2019, where they will present their application to the GSA evaluation board. The awards will be decided after these presentations, with the first-place winner receiving a EUR 100,000 prize. The runner up and third place winners will receive EUR 50,000 and EUR 30,000 respectively.

Insights: Xablu joins MyGalileoApp Mentor team

Last week, we had the pleasure of presenting Xablu’s tips & tricks to the contestants of the MyGalileoApp Competition 2019 organized by the European GNSS Agency (GSA). The competition calls for creative mobile application ideas that could benefit from the precise positioning offered by Galileo. Now, the 30 selected teams will embark on the next stage of the competition where we, from Xablu, will act as mentors.

In 2016, the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), called Galileo, went live. It was created by the European Union through the GSA. Galileo can provide high-precision information on our location, which is crucial for daily life activities. Location is the driving force behind many domains such as logistics and transport, which are indispensable in countless sectors such as agriculture, automated mobility, and healthcare.

The MyGalileoApp Competition received 148 innovative application ideas. Of these applications, 30 teams have been selected to partake in the second phase of the competition. During this phase, the teams will be supported by mentors and Xablu is honored to provide some of these mentors for the contestants.

Xablu knows, like no other, how important it is to solidify a concept before starting to build an application. Only by ensuring the solution matches the problem, the usability matches the user and the application fits the context, the application has a higher chance of being adopted and delivering the impact it is meant to have. The GSA works with the same mission while linking space to user needs: “While constantly working closely with a broad range of stakeholders, we ensure that the EU satellite navigation systems are fit for purpose and continue to meet the needs of those who use them today and tomorrow.

Xablu offers the contestants a tailored mentorship on Participatory Design

By helping them work together with their users, their chances of building a successful application increases immensely. Together, we can determine their stakeholders, create a plan of action for testing their application and evaluate the usability. It might seem that this work will take away time from the actual coding of the application but executing this process will save the contestants a lot of coding work and, thus, time since many issues are solved prior to development.

Moreover, Xablu has the technical expertise to help contestants realize their applications. Xablu builds applications through Xamarin, which allows for creating one shared-code base. This way, applications can be built for Android, iOS, and Windows with native app features and a native app feeling, while reusing a large percentage of your code-base. This allows for very efficient cross-platform development.

We want to wish all of the contestants good luck with the development of their applications and we hope we can personally help them achieve great impact using Galileo.

Bringing Xamarin to students in Groningen

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, June 19th, our team had the chance to deliver a guest lecture on Xamarin to ICT students at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen.

As part of their course, the students were introduced to several different mobile coding options. We were invited to provide an introduction to the Microsoft Xamarin platform.

Marc Bruins, who is a Xamarin University-certified trainer and Microsoft MVP, gave the hour-long lecture on getting started with Xamarin to the room of about 30 students.

After a break for lunch, 20 students returned to take part in a practical workshop led by Marc and XABLU developer Maurice Markvoort, where they tried their hand at creating a simple to-do list mobile app in Xamarin.Forms. Marc and Maurice provided guidance and advice to help the students along. After the workshop, we received great feedback on the experience from the students and their instructor!
